Eat Fat To Burn Fat Myth

Eat Fat To Burn Fat Myth

Weight watchers logoIn partnership with WW (Weight Watchers® reimagined).

We'll get right to it: like all things that seem too good to be true, sadly fat burning foods are mostly the stuff of myths and legends.

Most 'fat burning' foods and supplements on the market which claim to boost energy, curb appetite and increase metabolism are either ineffective or unsafe – or both, in some cases.

One thing these products have got right is that boosting your metabolism is a great way to lose body fat. In fact, understanding metabolism is the key to understanding how our bodies burn fat.

What is metabolism?

Metabolism describes the continuous chemical processes involved in maintaining the living state of cells within an organism. Put simply, metabolism is what keeps you alive and ensures everything is ticking over.

The many chemical processes happening within your body require energy. The minimum amount of energy required to carry out these processes is known as your basal metabolic rate (BMR).In other words, your BMR reflects the number of calories required to keep your body functioning at rest.

Depending on your age, gender, size and lifestyle, your BMR accounts for anything between 40% and 70% of your body's daily energy requirements.

Be wary of these 'fat loss' foods

The list of foods claiming to help increase your metabolism and boost your weight loss efforts is endless. "Lemon will make you lose weight! Seaweed will help you shed pounds! Celery will help you slim down!" However, it is not as simple as that.

From grapefruit to green tea and from caffeine to coconut oil, an endless stream of edibles have been hailed as weight loss superfoods that burn fat. But is there any evidence to back up these claims?

The fact is, most of these so-called metabolism-boosting foods have little to no effect. Some stimulants, like caffeine, chilli and spices may increase your heart rate slightly, which could cause a slight rise in metabolism.

However, the effect is so small that adding such foods to your diet is highly unlikely to impact your weight. Not only that, but a higher heart rate doesn't necessarily go hand-in-hand with weight loss.

It's not all doom and gloom though – the caffeine in tea and coffee could deliver an energy spike and increase your staying power at the gym, or help you go the extra mile during your workout.

In that sense, a cup of coffee might help you lose weight – just not in the way you thought.

Fat loss 101: top tips from the experts

The energy in food has the biggest impact on your weight. Many people blame their weight on a slow metabolism, when in fact they may simply be eating and drinking more calories than they're burning.

Tracking what you eat (through macros and micros), along with your activity, is the key to losing weight and keeping it off.

However, try to resist the temptation of crash diets in a bid to lose weight fast, as these can cause your metabolism to slow down.

Contrary to popular opinion, restrictive crash diets don't create the need to burn fat; in fact, they create the need for the body to slow down – and cling onto body fat.

Why? When your body and metabolism think you're starving, calorie-hungry muscle tissue gets broken down, to reduce energy expenditure. Your body also holds onto fat, a good source of stored energy.

This can not only lead to a higher percentage of body fat over time, but also slows down your metabolism. The lower your muscle mass, the slower your metabolism.

With a lower muscle mass and slower metabolism, it then becomes much easier to put body fat back on after coming off the diet.

Top 3 fat burners

Fat burning foods may be a myth, but these techniques can help you lose weight safely and healthily.

Exercise

You may not have much control over the speed of your metabolism, but you can control how many calories you burn through your level of physical activity. The more active you are, the more calories you burn, so whether you enjoy a walk, run, swim or a dance, try to incorporate around 150 minutes of activity into your week.

Eat well

When it comes to losing weight, choosing the right types of food is crucial. Following a healthy eating programme like WW can help you make the right food choices to lose weight. Protein is particularly important during weight loss, as it helps increase satiety and limit muscle loss. Good protein sources include skinless chicken breast, seafood, legumes, tofu, eggs and low-fat dairy products.

Lift weights

Muscle cells require more energy (read: calories) compared to fat cells, so it follows that people with a higher muscle mass tend to have a faster metabolism. Strengthening your muscles will raise your metabolism and turn you into a calorie-burning machine – even when you're at rest! Incorporate 2-3 strength training workouts per week into your exercise regime to ensure your weight loss comes from body fat as opposed to muscle.

The Suzuki V-Strom 1000, also known as the DL1000, is a dual-sport motorcycle with a 996 cc V-twin engine and a standard riding posture. It has been manufactured in Japan by Suzuki since 2002,[3] although sales in Europe ended in 2009.[5] The name V-Strom combines "V" referring to the bike's engine configuration with the German Strom, meaning stream or power.

The V-Strom motorcycle is based on the V-twin engine initially designed for the Suzuki TL1000S and TL1000R motorcycles. It incorporates design elements from other Suzuki motorcycles including fuel injection based on the GSX-R models. A smaller-engined version, V-Strom 650 is also manufactured.

Since 2020, Suzuki has started manufacturing the replacement for the DL1000, the Suzuki V-Strom 1050 and V-Strom 1050XT. Suzuki has completely redesigned the motorcycle, though the engine remained mainly the same, except for some changes to comply to Euro5 emission standards.

Kawasaki marketed an identical version of the bike named the KLV1000 in Europe.

Model year changes [edit]

2003 (K3) Added fork pre-load adjusters. Alternator output increased from 350 watts to 400 watts. New clutch slave cylinder dust cover, later production models.

2004 (K4) Redesigned instrument cluster. Upgrade 16-bit to 32-bit ECU, some sensors changed. New turn signals, 20 watt without reflector compared with earlier 10 watt. Belly pan redesigned. Stronger hand guards attached to end of handlebar. New adjustable windscreen design. Left handlebar switch incorporates flash-to-pass & emergency blinkers (EU models already had this). Stronger handlebars. Revised mirrors for less mirror breakage.

2005 (K5) Silver frame revised to black frame. Black rear frame covers vs previously fairing colour. New quiet clutch cover. Headlight interrupt when starting.

2007 (K7) New clear turn signal lenses and new swingarm pivot covers.

2013 (L3) Suzuki is introducing a 2014 model V-Strom 1000, based on the popular, and strong selling adventure bike category. A "Concept" bike was on display during the September 2012 Intermot Motorcycle Show.

DRIVERS is a series highlighting influential individuals in the HYPEBEAST sphere and their passion towards all things automotive. The approach is simple: what is car culture to you, and why do you have a passion for it? Each contributor is given a chance to shine light on their personal vehicle or vehicles, and asked to remark on how they are driving culture forward, both metaphorically and literally.

For staplepigeon designer and OG streetwear stalwart jeffstaple to choose a Mercedes as his whip of choice is not unexpected, but for him to turn away from the lauded G-Wagon to something smaller is a bit of a surprise. But that's exactly what the NYC legend did.

For those who have been living under a rock and sheltered away from all things hype for the last few decades, jeffstaple is a verified household name in streetwear, not only in the HYPEBEAST realm but all over New York, Japan, Paris, the UK and the EU. Beyond his brand staplepigeon, Jeff keeps busy with Reed Art Department, his own creative agency helping brands develop strong design inspirations.

Furthermore, his influence in fashion and style has led to countless collaborations with brands like Cole Haan, Timberland, PUMA and, of course, Nike. His aesthetic is instantly recognizable – grey, pink, black, pigeon. But does this translate to his taste in automobiles? Actually, no.

Jeff is no stranger to cars: his history has included some noteworthy city-centric mobiles like a Volkswagen Golf GTI MKVI, VW Tiguan, and even the hatchback of choice for any budding car fanatic, the Honda Civic Si Hatchback. But all of these cars have something in common – functionality, practicality, usability. So what did that lead him to? Another entry in everyday-ness: a used, Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 4MATIC from 2010.

The car isn't standard however – far from it actually. Jeff explains how it's the perfect car for him, the enhancements he commissioned to make the car what he needs everyday, and how the dream of owning a G-Wagon became a non-reality in the end.

Read more about Jeff's Benz and in case you missed it, we last featured Collegium founder and designer Nick Sisombath and his 1997 BMW M3 E36.

Make, model, year of your car?

Mercedes-Benz 2010 GLK 350 4MATIC, reimagined by Platinum Motorsports.

When did you acquire it?

September 2020.

What made you choose this car specifically?

I've always said to myself that when I've made enough money, I'm gonna treat myself to a Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon AMG G63. To me, it's the perfect Benz and the perfect automobile. In my mind, it never made any sense to lease that car. So you have to be ready to depart with about $275k+ all at once.

Finally that day came. I went to the Mercedes dealership to check out some different options. I was deliberating on details like paint, interior colors and fog lights. The dealer was kind enough to bring me to the rooftop where they keep all the inventory to see some more options. While up there, out of the corner of my eye, I peeped this grey GLK 350.

I've always had a soft spot for GLKs. I used to own one back in the day. They're solid as f*ck. And it's a complete mystery to me why MB discontinued them in 2015. Probably because it didn't fit into the design language of the current bubbly GL line. If you look at the entire line up now, the G-Wagon stands as its own iconic design vocabulary, separate from all other MBs. The GLK is a branch of that visual identity. If you're a fan of this boxier shape like I am, then these are the only two options available.

So anyway I ask "How much for that GLK?" The dealer said "THAT? $15k."

Now.. I am Chinese… son of an immigrant family. Which means I'm the type of person that checks into the Ritz Carlton Hotel but doesn't even THINK about touching that water bottle from the mini bar! $7 USD for water?! Nah we going to Walgreens! I'm the guy who walks out the bank doing a seven-figure transaction and picks up a quarter on the sidewalk, cuz in my mind, you never know if that'll be the last piece of money you ever touch.

So I start doing the math in my head…I could buy damn near 15 GLKs for the price of ONE G-Wagon?! (Not even factoring in the laughable 12 MPG the G-Wagon gets.) Is the G-Wagon really 15 TIMES better than the GLK? Before I knew it, I had the keys to the GLK in my hand.

What is the main purpose for this car for you?

I've been spending more time in LA during the pandemic. So it's really just to get around, run errands, and do the occasional getaway road trip.

"I could buy damn near 15 GLKs for the price of ONE G-Wagon?! Is the G-Wagon really 15 TIMES better than the GLK? Before I knew it, I had the keys to the GLK in my hand."

What has been done with this car? Where has it gone?

Hikes in Cali, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico.

Any details? Modifications? Changes?

So this was the fun part. Because I just saved $250k USD, I knew I could invest a bit in the modifications of my GLK. I took it to my man Rob at Platinum Motorsports. Here's a rundown of what we did together. Shoutout to him and his design eye for not letting me go overboard! (laughs)
- Full Khaki INOZETECH Wrap: the best wrap in the business.
- Black Matte/Black Gloss combination trims, wheels & badges.
- Complete chrome delete.
- Moved wheelbase out for a wider stance.
- New Alpine Halo 9 Apple CarPlay entertainment unit. (The existing unit was smaller than an iPhone 5 lol.)
- Installed back-up cam.
- Updated the interior old mahogany wood trim to all Piano Black.
- New carpeting.
- And we took wheel caps and emblems from a 2020 G-Wagon which does the most subtle job of updating the logos — and the vehicle.

What is a car to you: aspirational achievement, functional tool, stress-reliever, etc?

A car to me is the culmination of pretty much every aspect of design that exists. From architecture, to fashion, to sound design, to color, pattern, graphics…everything must be in perfect harmony for a car to excel. It is so incredibly difficult to align both the performance aspects and the aesthetic aspects into one creation.

So to me, a car is a representation of all that. But at the end of the day I also don't want to overly think about my car. It's a tool. I don't want to stress about it. I know Kia's and Camry's accomplish that. They are solid vehicles. But on the flip side, they don't spark joy. Every time I walk up to my GLK, I literally smile. And I think that inherently inspires me to try and create things that make other people smile also. I'm all about practicality, efficiency and joy. In Cali, you see just as many G Wagons as Toyota Prius's. So pulling up in this is strictly for the #IfYouKnowYouKnow set.

Honda Ruckus
Kia Soul
Volkswagen GTI MK6
Mercedes-Benz GLK 350
Volkswagen AllTrack

What would you like to have?

Bentley Continental GT Convertible.

What is the future of the automotive industry? Car culture?

1000% it's gonna be all about self driving. I've been playing around with Tesla Autopilot for about 3-4 years now. Many carmakers offer some version of it these days. Simply put, there's no way it will NOT be the future.

Also after covid subsides and is under control, ride sharing platforms will come back stronger than ever. So more LESS driving.

But on the opposite end of that spectrum, I think there will be a strong return to real actual driving. Places like the Classic Car Club in NY or the Motoring Club in LA will become more and more prevalent. Communities will sprout up where people will long for unassisted non-computerized REAL driving!

Compare it to the music industry. There was a time when you could choose between a variety of platforms: Tapes. CD. DAT. Minidisc. Singles. 12". Then digital came. There was a brief moment of confrontation between the camps. And now everyone has thousands of songs on their smartphones and it's really how 99% of the world consumes music. But on the flip side, vinyl music sales are at all time highs. People are spending $100,000s on sound systems just for playing vinyl records.

People will always long for the nostalgia, the quality and the depth. This goes for music and the same will go for driving. Sure Tesla's are fun to drive. But try a 1969 Ford Bronco or a Datsun 240ZX. Both old and new are technically "driving." But one experience is completely different than the other!

Whether you're shopping for car insurance for drivers with a suspended license or want the maximum coverage available, a range of choices exist in the marketplace. Check out these 10 options for automobile insurance.

One way to get car insurance if you have a suspended license is as a secondary driver on your spouse's car insurance. Look into the complaint ratios of the companies you're considering.

CC BY 2.0/State Farm/Flickr

Hardship License

A high-risk auto insurance company may insure you if the DMV gives you a short-term or temporary hardship license with an explanation that you require a license to drive kids to school or other necessities. Shop around to find an insurer who will make this accommodation.

Learner's Permit Car Insurance

Learners permit car insurance is a good option for families with a teenager learning to drive. With this kind of insurance, the teen driver would still be responsible for any damage he or she caused while driving.

Low-Income Auto Insurance

This type of coverage is available to families who live from paycheck to paycheck or with annual incomes within a certain range. This can be a challenging type of insurance to find, so you may need to shop around until you find a rate and provider that meets your needs.

CC BY 2.0/State Farm/Flickr

Accident Forgiveness

An accident forgiveness insurance policy protects a driver's driving record from negative financial repercussions from the insurance company especially due to an at-fault accident. However, this coverage does not pay damages for all at-fault accidents.

CC BY 2.0/State Farm/Flickr

Personal Injury Protection

This coverage reimburses the user related to medical expenses for injuries sustained to the driver or passengers inside the vehicle. This also covers lost wages and associated expenses.

CC BY 2.0/free pictures of money/Flickr

Comprehensive Coverage

This optional type of insurance provides coverage against all forms of theft or damage caused by accidents that are not collisions. Accident types include fire, falling trees and rocks and vandalism.

CC BY 2.0/free pictures of money/Flickr

Uninsured Motorist Protection

Many states require this type of coverage. With this protection, the insurance company will reimburse you when an accident is the fault of an insured driver. This includes hit-and-run accidents.

CC BY 2.0/State Farm/Flickr

Collision Coverage

Collision coverage is the most common piece of an insurance policy. This covers damage to your vehicle during an accident, whether or not you are at fault.

CC0/Pixel-mixer/Pixabay

Liability Insurance

Liability coverage protects other drivers during an accident caused by your own negligence or risky behavior. The law considers this essential, so you won't be able to skip this piece when you sign up for auto insurance.

Mercedes-AMG A45 S review - vying with the Audi RS3 for class honours

The A45 proves Mercedes-AMG has found the formula for not just a fast hot hatchback, but a genuinely involving one

29 Oct 2021

The latest Mercedes-AMG A45 S could hardly be more different from its predecessor. While the two cars look similar on paper – five-door hatchback bodies, turbocharged four-cylinder engines, all-wheel drive – the A45 S now feels like a car engineered for driving enthusiasts rather than simply a very quick way of getting from point to point.

It'll still do that too of course, and with over four hundred horsepower at its disposal, the A45 S is the most potent hot hatchback on sale. But big speed is now just one component of the A45's repertoire. It builds on the solid progress AMG made with the A35, and the end result is one of our favourite hot hatchbacks.

The A45's one of those cars that transcends class boundaries, too. It's almost not worth comparing with other hot hatchbacks, given its expense (it's more than fifty grand) and performance. In some ways, it actually makes more sense in CLA coupe form, where you might be tempted to class it as a supersaloon.

If we've one reservation, and it's a small one, it's that while the A45 does offer a more complete and engaging driving experience than the A35 below, it makes it look like particularly good value – though it's worth remembering that it's the A45 we brought along to evo Car of the Year 2019...

Mercedes-AMG A45 S: in detail

  • Engine, gearbox and technical specs – AMG has extracted more power from the A45's 2-litre than any other currently in production
  • Performance and 0-60 time – Gets to 60 in sub-four, and delivers a big hit of performance almost anywhere
  • Ride and handling – Completely different from the last A45, in that it's now genuinely fun to drive rather than simply being fast
  • MPG and running costs – Decent combined fuel economy and tyres should be easy to find. Long-term reliability currently unknown
  • Interior and tech – Stylish cabin gets plenty of unique AMG touches. Fancy infotainment screen set-up relatively easy to use
  • Design – Almost as subtle as a regular A-class if you choose the right colour, and nearly as angry as an Integrale if you opt for the aero kit

Prices, specs and rivals

Just over £50k will get you into an A45 S – £51,235 on the road, to be precise. That's undoubtedly a large sum of money for a five-door, Focus-sized hatchback, but could be considered a modest sum for something with comfortably more performance than most other cars at this price point. Extend it to £57,235 and you'll be into an A45 S Plus.

More reviews

The standard car is well-equipped, with niceties such as AMG Performance sports seats in Artico artificial leather and Dinamica artificial suede, specific AMG body styling, uprated brakes, a valved exhaust, numerous AMG interior details and a full infotainment suite with augmented reality satnav.

The Plus brings with it standard adaptive damping, the AMG aero kit, 19-inch forged cross-spoke alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, full leather trim and a Burmester sound system, among other things. The glorious Sun Yellow paintwork is a no-cost option, but metallic shades are £595 extra and the Designo paints a little more than that.

In terms of rivals, the A45's life just got a lot harder now the new Audi RS3 is out in the wild. That's because the new RS3's gone and upset the status quo with a chassis that's a far better medium to enjoying the warbly five-pot. In fact the chassis goes so far as to make the engine and transmission feel a little bit underwhelming. Bring on the twin test.

Looking outside the realm of hot hatchbacks – most are ten grand cheaper, a hundred horsepower down and have less prestigious badges – we'd instead consider spending a similar £50k sum on a proper sports car.

That arena's looking fairly healthy at the moment, with real diversity of choice; the new Toyota Supra, the BMW M2 Competition, Alpine A110, and Porsche 718 Cayman all start around the £50k mark. We'd note though that the Supra missed out on a finalist slot in eCoty 2019, in which the A45 S finished in third place.

The 718 Cayman is worth a look though, particularly given with a few options on an A45 S Plus, you're nearing the £64,088 of a 718 GTS 4.0 – basically a detuned Cayman GT4. A two-door sports car is clearly a very different proposition to a five-door hatchback, but if you're buying more for driver appeal than family-car practicality, there are few cars on sale today that can match the GTS.
